What if I told you that even if you have not studied a single Korean language course, not even a single day of your life, you already know a lot of Korean words?

How is this even possible?

Maybe you were a Korean student in your past life? or maybe reading all my blogs already made you magically learn  some words?... just kidding~ however it is most likely thanks to a good friend of ours: Konglish! 

Korean Loanwords is here to make your Korean learning journey easier than you thought.

💜 But what is actually KONGLISH?  ♡꒰ᵕ༚ᵕ⑅꒱

As you could imagine it is the Korean version of some English words.

KOREAN + ENGLISH

✅So I recommend you, if you are interested in learning Korean, to start with korean loanwords. 

These kinds of words show us that learning languages like Korean is not at all impossible, so that's good news for you! 

There are also some similarities with English words, even though the two languages are different.

 I will provide you a list of konglish words  that will be divided into 3 categories!

Now, we all know that food is more important than anything else... so, I feel obligated to start with this category.

Some Korean words can be ridiculously easy! 😹

Although in all languages vocabulary is challenging, there are times when Korean vocabulary seems ridiculously logical, easy and even obvious.

٩(ˊᗜˋ*)و

💗One of the things that always keeps me motivated to constantly learn Korean is the vocabulary! Plus I find it super fun and entertaining to discover word formations. This is especially true for native compound words!

💜There are more easy words from which you can come to recognize or deduce their meaning, without previously learning them, you just need to know a few words separately. 

At this point you must be a bit confused

To explain this so that it can be better understood I will give a few examples:

✅1. These two words separately mean: 눈 "Nun" (eyes) / 물 "Mul" (water).

Now if we put them together: 눈물 (nunmul) = means 'tears'. Eye + water = tears!

✅2. These two words separately mean: 속 "Sok" (inside) / 옷 "os" (clothes).

Now if we put them together: 속옷 (Sokos) = means 'underwear'. Inside + clothes = Underwear!

👀Let's see if you can figure out the meaning of the following examples! (you can leave your answer in the comments).

💟3. These two words separately mean: 목 "Mog" (neck) / 걸이 "geoli" (hang). 

Now if we put them together: 목걸이 (moggeoli) = means ______

Hint: Starts with "N"

💟4. These two words separately mean: 꽃 "Kod" (flower) / 집 "chip" (house).

Now if we put them together: 꽃집 (kodchip) = means ______

Hint: Starts with "F"

As you can see and guess some of the meanings of these words are just a few examples of the many that exist. This makes it much easier to learn the vocabulary for this language, additionally it is a very good way to memorize the vocabulary.

You can read Korean in just a few hours!

Even at the slowest possible pace, basic Korean literacy can be achieved in a few sessions, even less if you are motivated!

💜Recently many people have opted to learn Korean because learning Korean has many advantages. It is well known that Korea is constantly growing and is one of the major powers in Asia. Its unstoppable expansion and popularity is reflected in the international presence of major Korean brands such as; Samsung, LG or Hyundai.

💛The Korean culture is fascinating, being able to know their language will help you to better understand their way of life and their history, besides, you can manage to read the language even in a few hours!

💙At first glance it may seem very complicated, but actually READING is the easiest part of Korean. It is designed so that anyone can read and write. Also, unlike other languages, Korean is completely phonetic, once you know the consonant and vowel symbols you will be able to read any text in Korean.

✅On the other hand, the most important thing is to be as committed as possible. No matter why you started learning Korean, the important thing is that you stay motivated to learn.

💗My recommendations are:

💖1. Learn the vowels first.

When learning the Korean writing system, the best place to start is with the easiest of the easy: the vowels.

💞2. Learn the consonants

Don't worry about the sounds for now. Just focus on the pieces and how different elements can be added to a symbol to change the sound.

The shape of the LETTERS imatates the TONGUE!

Korean is the most perfect phonetic system ever devised.

Hangeul is one of the youngest alphabets in the world, inspired and created by King Sejong (which we have already talked about in previous posts). Linguists undoubtedly love Korean as they describe it as "the most perfect phonetic system ever devised" and there is no doubt, as it is a very well designed language.

The Korean letters may seem meaningless, but there is a much more complex history behind them.

💚From the beginning, the Korean alphabet was intended to be easy and quick to learn, as the needs of Korea at the time demanded the preservation of its culture and history through oral stories from generation to generation.  

💜Unlike Chinese or Japanese, which have hundreds or even thousands of characters, each with 10, 15 or even more strokes, the most complex Korean letter (or character) has only five strokes!

Moreover, Hangeul (korean) is a very scientific alphabet. Once you manage to understand the logic behind it, the learning journey becomes easier.

👀This is why the following was considered:

✅If you look at the shape of its letters, you will see that they mimic what the tongue does to pronounce them.

Korean uses distinct strokes to indicate distinctive features such as place of articulation (labial, coronal, velar, glottal), form of articulation (occlusal, nasal, sibilant, aspiration).

Long live the king Sejong!

 A life dedicated to his people

ଘ(੭ˊᵕˋ)੭* ੈ

✎From the time he was a kid, Sejong was a great lover of reading and loved to study. Records describe Sejong as the most studious king in Korean history. He became even more remarkable in his teens for his keen interest in the political and daily affairs of governance and for always seeking to improve the lives of his citizens.

However, King Sejong's most important achievement is the hangeul (한글), the Korean alphabet.

💗In the past in the Joseon dynasty, Chinese characters were used, meaning that the language used by Koreans at that time was Chinese and only those who had the privilege of learning it. That is why many citizens did not know how to read and write, as they did not have the money or time to do so.

The king wanted his people to be able to read and write, so he created something that was easy to learn. Thus, the vowels of hangeul (한글) were obtained from three elements which are: 

🌍"ㅡ" for earth.

👲"ㅣ" for man. 

💫"." for the sky

💜In addition, it is composed of 21 vowels (11 single and 10 double) and 19 consonants (14 single and 5 double).

👲Sejong spent his life working for and by his people. It must be for this reason that from the age of 40, his health began to weaken; so that he could not even sit for several hours attending to the affairs of the state. However, he never stopped reading, studying and working for a better life for the citizens. 

His ideals and legacy continue to live on through the King Sejong Institute, endorsed by the Korean embassy and where I am currently studying the korean language!  In addition, in one of the most important squares in Seoul located in Gwanghwamun, there is a monument of this monarch, in whose base you can see the entire Korean alphabet referring to his great contribution.
